Editorial Policy
Last updated: 2026-07-13
SmartHomeLens exists to make smart-home decisions less confusing. We are sceptical of shiny claims, careful about compatibility, and patient with readers who are starting from scratch.
How content is researched
We begin with manufacturer documentation, support material, standards information, and the practical questions a household will face: what it needs to work, what data it depends on, and what happens when an internet connection or subscription disappears. Where possible, we check claims against hands-on use and independent technical sources rather than repeating launch language.
How it is written and by whom
Guides are written by Priya Nandakumar, our Founder and Lead Reviewer, or by the SmartHomeLens editorial team. The writer explains the trade-offs in plain language: setup effort, interoperability, ongoing costs, and limits matter as much as a feature list. We would rather leave a question open than dress up an assumption as certainty.
Review and fact-check workflow
- Research: gather primary documentation, testing notes, and compatibility details.
- Write: turn the evidence into a practical recommendation with its constraints stated clearly.
- Review: check specifications, links, pricing context, interoperability claims, and whether the conclusion matches the evidence.
- Publish or update: publish only after review; when products, firmware, or facts change, revise the guide and its relevant recommendations.
Updates and last-reviewed dates
We review core buying guides at least every 12 months, and sooner when firmware, platform support, pricing, availability, or a product recall changes the advice. Article pages show their review or update date so readers can judge how current a recommendation is; a newer date means the page was checked or revised, not that every product was automatically re-tested.
Corrections
Errors happen, and a useful correction is more valuable than saving face. If you spot an inaccurate specification, outdated claim, missing disclosure, or unclear conclusion, please report it through our contact page with the page link and supporting detail if you have it. We verify corrections, update the page when warranted, and make material changes promptly.
Editorial independence and affiliate links
SmartHomeLens may earn an affiliate commission when readers buy through some links, at no extra cost to them. Advertising and affiliate relationships are kept separate from editorial decisions: they do not buy recommendations, ratings, favourable language, or inclusion in a guide. We do not accept sponsored placements, and a product can be recommended without a commercial link—or criticised despite having one.
