About SmartHomeLens
SmartHomeLens is an independent smart-home publishing site. We are not a storefront and we are not a press-release funnel: every recommendation here starts with the gear set up in a real home, lived with, and written up honestly — including what broke.
Who runs the site
SmartHomeLens is run by a small, hands-on team led by Priya Nandakumar. We keep the team small on purpose, so the people testing the devices are the same people writing about them. That is also why our advice tends to be measured rather than breathless: we have set up enough hubs, bridges, and half-finished ecosystems to be sceptical of anything shiny, and patient with anyone still finding their feet.
Founder & Lead Reviewer
Priya Nandakumar is a former network and systems engineer who spent a decade building resilient infrastructure before turning that scepticism on the consumer smart-home market. Over the years she has wired up Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, and Matter devices across real homes, migrated households off cloud-only apps onto Home Assistant, and kept the failure logs to show which promises actually hold up. That background is why this site treats “it works on the box” as the start of testing, not the end.
Our mission
Our mission is interoperability-first, ten-year livability. We favour open standards — Matter, Thread, Zigbee, and Z-Wave — over closed, single-vendor walled gardens, because a smart home you can still run, repair, and extend in ten years is worth far more than one that dazzles for a single season. Before we recommend anything, we ask a plain question: will this still be useful when the app is abandoned, the trial subscription lapses, or you decide to switch ecosystems?
How we make money
SmartHomeLens earns affiliate commissions when you buy through some of our links, at no extra cost to you — and we accept no paid or sponsored placements, so a commission never buys a kinder review, a higher rating, or a spot on a list. If a product is mediocre, we say so, whether or not there is a link attached.
How we keep ourselves honest
If you want to see how that works in practice, read our Editorial Policy for how we handle independence, corrections, and conflicts of interest, and How We Test for the bench process and criteria behind every rating.
Independently tested — no sponsored placements.
